How it presents
Symptom
Express Plus NACS port overtemp / derate — handle or inlet temps climb, session throttles or Faults, often in sun or after damaged handle work. chargepoint field note: keep evidence scrubbed and prove the ranked cause before module RMA on CP-XP-NACS.
Root causes (by observed frequency)
- #1 NACS handle contact contamination or high resistance
Heat follows the handle
- #2 Blocked handle cooling / sun soak on west-facing stalls
- #3 Temp sensor drift or harness damage at NACS inlet
- #4 Vehicle-side inlet issue proven by a second vehicle
Diagnostic procedure
1. Capture derate temps and which port (NACS vs CCS)
Expected: Port ID + temp
Tools: HMI
2. IR scan handle/contacts mid-session
Expected: Hot spot location
Tools: IR
3. Clean/inspect contacts; second-vehicle prove
Expected: Fault follows vehicle or stall
Tools: known vehicles
4. Check sensor plausibility vs IR
Expected: Sensor ≈ IR
Tools: DMM
5. Replace NACS handle/inlet assembly per OEM if contacts/sensor bad
